A debate that has ran for over a decade. Is Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo the best footballer in the world?  Well, this afternoon has seen that question put to bed as Messi scored an epic 50th hat-trick during Barcelona's 4-2 win over Sevilla in La Liga.
Messi's one-man demolition of the Sevilla defence was capped off with arguably one of his greatest ever goals as he scored a sparkling first-half volley to level things up after Jesus Navas had opened the scoring for Sevilla.
Two second half goals for Messi secured the three points for Barca, but it was Messi's personal milestones that surpassed the win for the Catalans as not only did Messi land his 50th career hat-trick, but he also netted his 650th career goal.
Sevilla, in particular, are a side that hate seeing the sight of Messi as he broke a La Liga record on Saturday afternoon with the most goals scored against one team.  During his career Messi has scored 29 league goals against Sevilla and in total 36 goals in 35 matches against the fellow top-flight club in all competitions.
Likening Messi's epic statistics to some Premier League clubs, Messi has scored 32 league hat-tricks and in that time Arsenal as a club have only amassed 30 hat-tricks, while Liverpool (26), Manchester United (22) and Chelsea (21) fall short of Messi's stats, so that just shows the sensational scoring ability of the Argentinean legend.
Having scored 33 goals in 32 games this season, Messi's career stats has seen him score 585 goals for Barcelona and 65 for Argentina, which shows why he has surpassed Cristiano Ronaldo's goal-scoring records and should be regarded as the best player of his generation.
Lionel Messi's Career In Numbers:
Goals Scored: 650
Goals For Barcelona: 585
Goals For Argentina: 65
Career Hat-Tricks: 50
