  • Chelsea have been crowned FA Cup winners 2017/18 after beating Manchester United at Wembley
  • Eden Hazard opened the scoring on 22 minutes after slotting a penalty past David De Gea
  • Phil Jones brought the Belgian down in the area, though was only awarded a yellow card for the foul
  • Alexis Sanchez thought he had equalised in the second half, only for his effort to be ruled offside.
  • It was with a flick of the eyes and a lashing of the right foot that Eden Hazard helped crown Chelsea FA Cup winners 2018, in what could be Antonio Conte's final game as manager.

  • On 22 minutes Cesc Fabregas, afforded the freedom of the midfield, played one of those lovely, raking passes inviting Eden Hazard to accelerate.

  • However, it wasn’t quite as good as Phil Jones made it look. The United defender seemed to be in two minds and ended up on the back foot, allowing Hazard to sprint away without a challenge.
  • Hazard had been brought down in the area by United defender Phil Jones, who failed to make contact with the ball

  • Hazard ended up in a heap following the challenge, as referee Michael Oliver instantly pointed to the penalty spot
Now it was a straight race between Hazard and Jones. Clearly, that was no real contest. And as Hazard advanced ever closer to goal, you wondered whether the defender would stick or twist; whether he would have confidence in De Gea to save the shot or feel that he had to intervene. The moment he opted for the latter, you feared for United. Sure enough, the desperate challenge was committed yet clumsy, an open invitation to award a penalty.

It was, however, not a red card as, under this season’s rules, he had made a clear attempt to win the ball. It being FA Cup final day, many casual viewers were apparently confused, experiencing this rule for this first time this season. Among them was Antonio Conte, who also seemed to think a red card should be awarded and made his point forcefully to fourth official Lee Mason.

As for the penalty, Hazard simply rolled it passed De Gea with a degree of contempt. The United goalkeeper had gone the wrong way and Hazard must have seen his movement very early, as he showed no fear in gently stroking the ball in, not even bothering to put it in the corner.

Eden Hazard has admitted that he “cannot be happy” at Chelsea FC unless the Blues are winning and challenging for top trophies.

The Blues have struggled to produce consistent performances this season in what has been Antonio Conte’s second season in charge at the west London club.
Chelsea FC are currently in fifth place in the Premier League table and looking as though they are going to miss out on a top-four finish in the Premier League this term.
That means that the west London side are likely to have to settle for a spot in the Europa League for next season rather than the Champions League.
Hazard has insisted that no matter how well he is performing for Chelsea FC, he cannot be satisfied if the team is not winning games and challenging for trophies.
Speaking to Metro, Hazard said: “Yes I have scored some goals – that’s why I am on the pitch – but the thing I want most is for my team to win.
“When we are not winning, I cannot be happy. We are fifth in the Premier League and we are out of the Champions League. We didn’t win the League Cup. So it is a bad season.
“I can score 50 goals – but that isn’t important. The most important thing in football is to win something for my team.”
Chelsea FC will be hoping to somehow catch Tottenham Hotspur in the race for Champions League qualification before the season is out.
The Blues are currently five points behind Tottenham in the table with just four games left to play.
The west London side have won the Premier League title in two of the last three seasons but have struggled to produce consistent performances this term.

Antonio Conte is set to heavily rotate his starting line-up when Everton visit Stamford Bridge on Wednesday - with the Chelsea boss not prioritising the League Cupthis season.
Conte has admitted he will rest his regular starters for Chelsea's fourth-round tie against Everton in midweek with trips to Bournemouth in the league and Rome in the Champions League to come for the Blues in the next seven days.
However, two players who will benefit from the League Cup fixture against Everton are Charly Musonda and Kenedy - who are set to start as they did in the 5-1 win over Nottingham Forest in September.

Musonda is likely to play on the right wing while Willian could play on the left flank - giving Conte the chance to rest star man Eden Hazard.
Michy Batshuayi is set to start up front following his match-winning brace against Watford and, indeed, his hat-trick against Nottingham Forest in the last round of this competition.
Kenedy, meanwhile, is set to take up Marcos Alonso's left wing-back role with Davide Zappacosta playing on the other flank in the absence of the injured Victor Moses.
Danny Drinkwater (calf) and N'Golo Kante (hamstring) are still sidelined with their respective issues, which restricts Conte's options in midfield.
Tiemoue Bakayoko and Cesc Fabregas are the likely midfield pairing on Wednesday, therefore, but Kyle Scott or Ethan Ampadu could be surprise starters
Further back, and Andreas Christensen could be recalled to the side after starting against Roma but being dropped for the visit of Watford.
If he is recalled, he is likely to play alongside Antonio Rudiger and captain Gary Cahill while Willy Caballero starts in goal as he did against Forest.
Chelsea predicted startineg XI vs Everton: Caballero, Rudiger, Christensen, Cahill, Zappacosta, Fabregas, Bakayoko, Kenedy, Musonda, Batshuayi, Willian

Something remarkable happened at 3.11pm in this rather angst-ridden corner of south London. That was the moment Andros Townsend burst to the byline and pulled a cross back for Yohan Cabaye to collect on the run, David Luiz’s touch propelling the loose ball back on to the Frenchman who, almost inadvertently, poked it goalwards. Thibaut Courtois would still have blocked it but, in a quirk of favourable fate utterly out of keeping with Crystal Palace’s campaign to date, the ball flicked off César Azpilicueta on the edge of the six-yard box and in.

The visitors might even have established a lead thereafter, Marcos Alonso seeing an attempt deflected just wide and Fàbregas spitting a free-kick just over the angle of post and bar. Yet Chelsea can rarely have mustered a 45 minutes of football as disjointed and slack as this first-half display, with the manner in which Conte pounded down the touchline for the dressing room at the break indicative of his mood. They trailed again by then, victims of Wilfried Zaha’s return to Palace’s ranks after a two-month absence.
The Ivorian had been excellent, tormenting the visitors’ back three and seeing shots fly marginally wide or blocked at the last. It was Mamadou Sakho who provided him with his moment, robbing Willian and bustling forward before clipping Zaha into the penalty area. The forward wriggled between Azpilicueta and the substitute Davide Zappacosta – on for a hamstrung Victor Moses – to finish smartly across Courtois and into the corner.
There had to be an improvement from the champions thereafter, their newfound sense of urgency summed up by Fàbregas belting a shot on to the crossbar from 20 yards shortly after the break. Michy Batshuayi, so disappointing as a lone forward while Tammy Abraham was scoring a brace in distant Swansea, departed with an angry yelp to the heavens, but Pedro offered far more of an energetic threat thereafter. It was the Spaniard who sprinted into space and forced Speroni into a low save as Palace sat ever deeper, the nerves belatedly kicking in as energy drained away. Another substitute, Charly Musonda, should have equalised, while Speroni did well to claim another Marcos Alonso header.
The contest had long since become an exercise in attack versus defence, Palace’s forays forward only ever squeezed out on the counter-attack though quite how Patrick van Aanholt, a former Chelsea player, managed to snatch a shot wide of a gaping net after Courtois spilled Townsend’s drive defied belief. Those in the Holmesdale end wailed their frustration but, by the end, that was forgotten. Palace have finally broken their duck. For Chelsea, a second successive league defeat will lead to painful introspection.

Chelsea’s momentum had been checked impressively by Manchester City just before the international break but this fixture should provide an opportunity to rediscover lost rhythm. Even in the absence of Álvaro Morata and N’Golo Kanté, they will travel south across the capital and confident Crystal Palace, pointless and scoreless to date, can be overcome. The hosts must do without Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Christian Benteke, but will at least be bolstered by the return of Wilfried Zaha and possibly Julian Speroni to their ranks. At some point they must revive. It may be too much to ask for the recovery to c against Chelsea. Dominic Fifield

Chelsea will collide against Crystal Palace when the Premier League returns this weekend and the Blues should be considered favorites to earn all three points.
The Eagles have lost all seven PL games in the new campaign so far. On the other hand, the reigning Champions have already lost twice in the league this season.
Conte’s men are six points behind the Manchester clubs and must get back to winning ways.
As far as the team news is concerned, star midfielder Kante and center forward Morata are suffering from hamstring concerns and should be out of the game.
In such a scenario, we can expect star playmaker Eden Hazard to start as the lone striker up front against Palace. The likes of Pedro and Willian should start with the Belgian international in the attacking third.
In the absence of Kante, Fabregas and summer signing Bakayoko should start in the center of the park for the Blues. Here is Chelsea’s strongest possible 3-4-3 XI vs Palace.

An old myth resurfaces this week. As Manchester United travel to Liverpool on Saturday for their first big game of the season, you may hear the line that, since they've still not met a direct rival, we still don’t really know how good they are. The argument plays on the old adage that you’ve "got to win the big games" to take the title.

All of this is wrong. The importance placed on the Premier League’s titanic clashes defies both logic and the new financial reality. United sit joint top with Manchester City with six wins and a draw in seven games, yet the modest status of their opponents so far appears to have devalued their results, as if they hardly matter. “They are yet to be tested,” we hear. But recent history disagrees.
Over the last four years, the champions have not done well in the big games at all. The key quality for title aspirants has instead been overshadowed by talk about wins that make "big statements" and "send a message". Though it might not look like it, United have already passed the biggest test.

The results of recent title winners suggest Manchester United can stumble at Anfield and still be in good health.
Last season Chelsea lost to United, Tottenham, Arsenal and Liverpool. In the top-six ‘mini league’ they came second, just ahead of Spurs. High above towered unbeaten Liverpool, who according to the adage should have coasted to the real title. Instead they came fourth, 17 points behind Chelsea.

Falling down: Liverpool's record against lesser teams cost them dear last season
Chelsea were actually one of the better big-game champions of late. Leicester lifted the trophy by winning four of their 12 games against the top six – merely a third. They drew five and lost three. A year earlier, in the era of the top four, Chelsea won just two of their six clashes with direct title rivals. It proved more than enough to win the league.
In 2014, Manchester City won it by losing three of their six games against the eventual top four. That season, the big-game experts were Chelsea, who won five and drew one – an impressive record, though in the real table they came third. The reason was that, like Liverpool last season, they lacked the main ingredient of which champions are made.
    ‘Secret’ formula
This not-so-secret factor is a formula that consistently beats the smaller teams. Find it, and evidence suggests you may only need the odd victory against your closest rivals.

    • Crystal Palace have won only one of their previous eight Premier League matches against Chelsea at Selhurst Park (W1 D1 L6), winning 1-0 in March 2014 under Tony Pulis.
    • Chelsea (421) have won more points in Premier League London derbies than any other side in the competition’s history (P232 W119 D64 L49).
    • Crystal Palace are currently on the second longest run in minutes without scoring from the start of the season in Football League history (630 minutes) - only Halifax Town in the fourth tier in 1990-91 (730 minutes) had a longer wait to score.
    • The last top-flight team to lose their opening eight matches of a season were Manchester United in 1930-31, who went on to lose their first 12.
    • Crystal Palace could become the first team in Football League history to lose nine consecutive games without scoring – on only three other occasions have a team lost eight games in a row without scoring and only once in the top-flight (Sunderland between November 1976 and January 1977).
    • Chelsea have failed to score in two of their last three Premier League matches under Antonio Conte, as many as in their previous 36. The Blues only failed to score in three of their 38 PL games last season and have already drawn a blank in two of their seven so far this term.
    • Crystal Palace have an xG total of 8.14 in the Premier League this season, meaning that, based on historic data, the average side would be expected to have scored eight goals from the chances they have been presented. In comparison, Chelsea have scored 12 goals despite having an xG total of just 6.81.
    • Antonio Conte could become the first Chelsea manager to record two separate winning runs of 6+ Premier League away games (also December 2016), with the Blues winning their last five on the road in the PL.
    • Roy Hodgson has never lost his first four Premier League games in charge of a team (lost first three with Fulham).
    • Hodgson could become only the second permanent manager to lose his first four Premier League games in charge of a side without scoring a single goal after his predecessor Frank De Boer. Prior to this season, no permanent Premier League manager had lost their first four without scoring at a club.
    • Cesc Fabregas (49 goals) could become just the third Spanish player to net 50 goals in the Premier League after Diego Costa (52) and Fernando Torres (85). Fabregas could be the first Spanish midfielder to reach this milestone.
