January 24 – Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona have taken over at the top of this year’s Deloitte Football Money League, relegating Manchester United to third place.
But all of the Premier League’s Big Six are in the top ten of the table, which monitors top-line growth among the world’s – in practice Europe’s – biggest clubs.
Deloitte said that European champion club Real Madrid’s revenue jump to €750.9 million was “primarily due to commercial growth of €54.8 million, including an uplift in sponsorship, merchandising and exploitation of increasingly lucrative pre-season fixtures. At €356.2 million,” Deloitte continued, “Real Madrid now have the highest commercial revenue of any football club globally”.
After Madrid, the rest of the top ten was as follows: Barcelona €690.4 million, Manchester United €666 million, Bayern Munich €629.2 million, Manchester City €568.4 million, Paris Saint-Germain €541.7 million, Liverpool €513.7 million, Chelsea €505.7 million, Arsenal €439.2 million and Tottenham Hotspur €428.3 million.
Nine of the top 20 were English, four Italian, three German, three Spanish and one French. Combined revenues of this top 20 rose 6% to €8.3 billion. While Premier League club turnover was depressed by the depreciation of sterling, the impact was not sufficient to significantly change the rankings.
By focusing on the top-line, this exercise gives only a partial picture of prevailing trends in European club finances. Recent seasons have seen the biggest clubs enjoying an enviable combination of strong revenue growth and relatively subdued wage hikes. This has given them lots to spend on new players, triggering inflation in the transfer market.
With market valuations pushed far in excess balance-sheet values – this month’s UEFA club benchmarking report calculated that “players sold in the 2017 financial year had a combined transfer fee of €4.3 billion, but were valued at just €1.1 billion at the time of their sale” – and the amortisation process working its magic, even nominally “buying” clubs are finding net profits pumped up by gains on player sales.

It may be considerably more than €100 million.
Interestingly, the three clubs elbowed out of this year’s top 20 – Leicester City, Napoli and Southampton – all featured among the top ten European clubs on the basis of net profits in the 2016-17 financial year. According to UEFA, Leicester and Napoli were first and second.
“The curse of all curses is the revenue line,” according to the late Roberto Goizueta, a notably successful boss of frequent football sponsor Coca-Cola. It is not quite the same, arguably, for football clubs, but the revenue line does not the whole story tell.

The landing of Eden Hazard at Real Madrid is complicated. Despite the signing of Christian Pulisic, who suggested that he was coming to replace the Belgian, Chelsea still does not give the green light to his departure.
Florentino Pérez insists on keeping alive the Hazard option , which ends contract in 2020 and, at the moment, refuses to renew, expecting a firm offer from Madrid, which still has not arrived.
The ex of Lille wants to land in summer at the Santiago Bernabéu, but Florentino prefers to bet on Neymar or Mbappé. If neither of them arrives, they will go for the '10' blue.
But in London they do not see it as clear. The signing of Pulisic from Borussia Dortmund is not to replace Hazard, but Willian and Pedro,who have already entered the thirties. The desired to make the Belgian forget is Hirving Lozano, the crack of PSV.

The problem is that Mino Raiola, agent of the Mexican, for now complicates the signing of 'Chucky', which holds the key to unlock the signing of Eden for Real.

MANCHESTER UNITED face a huge task in reaching the Champions League quarter-final after drawing PSG in the last 16.Jose Mourinho’s side might need to win the competition to qualify next season after their domestic struggles so far in the current campaign.

As well as topping a group that included Liverpool and Napoli, the French giants are cruising in Ligue 1 and are yet to lose in the league in 16 games.

How will the likes of Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelof , Chris Smalling and Phil Jones deal with Kylian Mbappe, Edison Cavani and Neymar.

GOOD OMEN FOR LIVERPOOL?

Liverpool look to have got unlucky by drawing Bayern Munich.
But history might be on their side if we look back at some of their other European encounters.
The pair have faced off in Europe’s top competition only once before, with the Reds coming out on top on away goals in the 1980/81 semi-final. They also won 3-2 in the 2011 UEFA Super Cup.

DOESN’T MATA WHO WE GET

The draw is just ten minutes away and Manchester United’s Juan Mata sounds confident despite the prospect of facing one of the competition’s big guns.
"We have to wait and see who we play against,” he said.
“We have to believe that we can beat whoever it is. It is going to be a difficult team because obviously the teams that qualified are very good."

Virgil van Dijk is hoping Liverpool can go one better than last year.
The Reds were beaten by Real Madrid in a thrilling final And the Dutchman is desperate to get his hands on the trophy this time around.
"We want to reach the maximum and hopefully do better than we did last year in the Champions League,” Van Dijk said.
“You need to have dreams, you need to go for it, otherwise why would you be a footballer?"

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp could face former club Borussia Dortmund in the last 16.
And his ex-player Mario Gotze has spoken about the prospect of a reunion.
“That would be a tough test,” the German playmaker said.
“Let's wait and see what happens. Regardless of which opponent you get in the Champions League last 16, it will be tense and very, very tough."

JOSE’S TOP FOUR CLAIM

Does United boss Jose Mourinho might need to win the Champions League to stand any chance of getting in to the competition next season?
Well, Mourinho is having none of it despite his side being a whopping 11 points off the top four after Sunday's defeat by Liverpool.
“Yes, I think (we can),” he said. “What gives me that belief? It gives me the belief that we are going to make much more points in the second part of the season than we did in the first part.”
“I know we lost some other matches but we played away at Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City - probably the three best teams apart from Tottenham.
“But we play with them away. I think we have more possibility to get more points in the second part of the season than the first part.”

Just a quick reminder as to how this works - in case you didn’t already know.
No teams from the same country can be drawn against each other and teams who qualified from the same group will be kept apart for this round.
Seeded teams will have the advantage - if it is one - of playing the first leg away from home.
Just looking at the potential opponents for the unseeded English teams and it makes for some scary reading. Porto must be the one team they all want.

Lucky day for Barça. The azulgrana box feared to cross with the Liverpool or the Manchester United of Mourinho in eighth of the Champions. But the rival will be Olympique de Lyon.
A team clearly inferior to the English, despite the prestigious victory he got against Manchester City. The biggest threat from the French, the attackers Depay, Fekir, Traoré and Aouar and the midfield that form Ndombélé and Tousart, both on the culé agenda.



The Barcelona is without doubt the favorite to progress to the quarter, and also without too many problems. Leo Messi already thinks about the Champions Leagueand releases the bomb: this year yes.
Motivated after knowing that the pass to the next round is practically sealed, it concentrates on the other two great candidates, with permission from City of Guardiola, Real Madrid and Juventus.
To the white square, which has touched another affordable rival, Ajax, Messi has sent him a warning. The Dutch team was able to stand up to Bayern Munich and are able to surprise a team, the Solari, at low hours.
The De Jong, Tadic, Ziyech, De Ligt, Dolberg, Huntelaar ... are not turkey moo. At Barça they are clear: if the Real does not wake up, they can take a surprise.
For its part, Cristiano Ronaldo's Juventus will face off with Atlético de Madrid,which will be the most attractive match of the first round, along with Liverpool-Bayern Munich.
Leo has also sent a 'message' to Cristiano: they are not favorites. The set mattress, despite the heavy defeat in Dortmund, four to zero, has straightened the course and only yielded a sterile draw against Bruges.
With the motivation of playing the final at home, Simeone's team has Griezzmann, Lemar, Correa, Koke, Saul and company to fight with a Juve who has already lost two games, against United and against Young Boys.

Barcelona are adamant that Ousmane Dembele is not for sale this summer, despite reported late interest from Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain on Thursday, ESPN FC reports.Kike Marin claimed that Arsenal had made a transfer deadline day offer worth €100million for the France international.

Earlier in the day, reports in France had suggested Dembele was also a target for PSG, who have until the end of the month to complete a deal.However, Barca have said throughout the transfer window that their plan is to keep hold of the forward.

Dembele became the club’s most expensive player (since replaced by Philippe Coutinho), when he joined from Borussia Dortmund for an initial fee of €105m last summer, following Neymar’s move to Paris.

Barca Josep Maria Bartomeu has a last minute offer on the table by French forward Ousmane Dembélé . And the azulgrana entity has already given his approval. Finding a new destination for the former attacker of Borussia Dortmund is one of the main objectives that the club has set this summer. Above all, to make room for an Antoine Griezmann called to form a lethal lead alongside  Leo Messi and Luis Suarez . His destiny, however, will not be the Atlético de Madrid of Cholo  Simeone , but will go much further: to the Premier. 

Unai Emery , the new coach of Arsenal, has put the name of Dembélé as one of his requests for what will be his first season at the head of the  Gunner team. The former Sevilla coach wants to get rid of the thorn that has stuck in a PSG in which not even the big signings of Brazilian Neymar and Frenchman Kylian Mbappé allowed him to fulfill the great dream of the owner of the club, the Qatari Nasser Al-Khelafi : win the Champions League.


The new coach of Arsenal, however, is not willing to pay a million for a player for which the Bartomeu Barca must pay Borussia Dortmund about 140 million euros . It controls the situation well and Emery knows that Barça urges shed Dembélé and wants to get slice of the situation calling for an assignment with purchase option of the French striker. An option with which the club would be in principle agreed.

200 matches . Ivan Rakitic reached this round number of matches played in the clash against Las Palmas . The Croatian arrived in 2014 and has played 89.4% of the games that the Barça team has played since then, in which they have lifted nine titles.

Rakkitic will turn 30 on March 10 , but it can be said that he is in one of his most fulfilling moments. The midfielder is signing a brutal season. He has not even had the slump he had in other seasons, which started at the top but had a bad shape in the middle of the season.

The enjoyment with the absolute confidence of Ernesto Valverde also has much to do. The player is one of the members of the group with the most minutes behind him this season. He is fourth on the list behind only Leo Messi , Luis Suárez and Sergio Busquets and feeling like an important player still makes him stronger.

Phillippe Coutinho puts Rakitic in check

But the midfielder knows that everything can change next season. The arrival of Phillippe Coutinho has put him in check and begins to have doubts about his continuity. The ex of Sevilla did not happen to be suddenly bench meat.

The reason is the possible signing of Antoine Griezmann . The arrival of Atlético de Madrid striker would relegate Coutinho to the midfield, saturating the area and greatly reducing the minutes of Rakitic .

Rakitic asks for time

So much so that Ivan has asked FC Barcelona to clarify the future project when before. The player has offers, some of them very tempting. Like the Manchester United of José Mourinho , who see him as the midfielder that the British team lacks.

An offer to which you have requested a month of time to respond. By then Barça will be much clearer how far this season can go and it will be the moment in which those responsible begin to make decisions for the next year. We will see if among them is the continuity or not of Ivan Rakkitic .

The 20-year-old winger is one of the world's most expensive players, but has started only three games for Barca and was an unused sub against Chelsea
Ousmane Dembele has endured a nightmare start to his Barcelona career. The French international, signed after Neymar's sale to Paris Saint-Germain in a €105 million move from Borussia Dortmund which could rise to €150m with add-ons, simply cannot catch a break.
The 20-year-old winger has played in just nine games for the Catalan club this season and started only three, with no goals to his name and a sole assist. It is not what Barca or the player himself will have had in mind.
Tuesday night seemed like it might bring a new opportunity. Barca lined up with four midfielders and looked incredibly narrow against Chelsea in the teams' Champions League last-16 first leg clash at Stamford Bridge. But with his side crying out for natural width, coach Ernesto Valverde turned not to Dembele, but to Aleix Vidal.
“Why Aleix and not Dembele?" Valverde said after the game. "Dembele has been out injured for a while, and for a match like this, coaches go with the things they know best.
“Aleix also gives us things, a different profile. When we are faced with a match like this, I rely on certainties. I had to respect what we have been doing, so I played Paulinho as a starter and I brought on Aleix Vidal for more depth. It wasn’t the time to experiment. That’s how I see it.”
It was the latest disappointment for Dembele in a season of setbacks and the decision to send on Vidal as he remained on the bench was clearly a blow for the youngster. After the match, he trudged disconsolately through the mixed zone at Stamford Bridge.
With two spells on the sidelines, three starts and only nine appearances in total, the move has not lived up to expectations so far by any means. But some of that can be traced back to what happened in the summer, before he had even joined Barcelona.
Back then, Dembele went on strike in order to force through his move from Dortmund and was then separated from the squad by the German club. That meant he missed much of the team's preparation work and by the time he had joined Barca, he was not properly fit.
"There is no reason to make a big thing out of it," Valverde said in January. "The fact is that he didn't have a proper pre-season and we want to help him recover, little by little."
The initial injury came away to Getafe in September, but what looked like a hamstring strain was complicated by tendon damage and to make matters worse, it came as he attempted a needless back-heel flick.
"When a player is going at that speed and does a back-heel, it can happen," Valverde later said. "Maybe in a more experienced player it wouldn’t have. He’s a young player and he’ll recover.”
Dembele had to wait until January to make his return, but the injury flared up again on only his second substitute appearance (away to Real Sociedad) and when he came back again in the home match against Getafe, he gave the ball away 13 times in just 27 minutes.
There are also concerns over the player's diet, with Barca having assigned the winger his own chef to ensure he is eating healthily, while he still cannot speak Spanish well enough to communicate with his team-mates.
Despite all of that, the club believe he will become an important player at Camp Nou, but Valverde is keen to exercise caution and with the winger still only 20, there is no need to rush. Given his injury problems and lack of a proper pre-season, however, it may be some time until the fans see the best of Dembele in a Barca shirt.
