Barcelona took another step towards a La Liga title defence with a 4-2 win at Sevilla.
The visitors were 2-1 down, but managed to complete a comeback thanks to Lionel Messi. It has to be one of those games where the scoreline does not do any justice to the performance of the better team.
Sevilla were on top – in terms of goals and the performance – for most parts of the fixture, but Messi took the game away from the hosts in the last 20 or so minutes.
The Argentine once again pulled Barcelona from the jaws of defeat and handed them a crucial win at the Ramon Sanchez Pizuan. But how did the other Barcelona players perform? We take a look.
BARCELONA (4-3-3)

Marc-Andre ter Stegen 4: An uncharacteristically dull game from the German. Looked off-colour and conceded possession during the counter which led to Sevilla’s second goal.
Nelson Semedo 5: Dominated by Quincy Promes and Maximilian Wober in defence, no contribution in attack. The Portuguese was rightly taken off at the break.
Gerard Pique 4: After a stretch of tremendous games, Pique had his bad day as he failed to dispatch the Sevilla attack. Was caught sleeping ahead of their second goal.
Samuel Umtiti 5: Not the best return for the Frenchman. Looked lethargic and lost for most parts of the game. Pablo Sarabia had him on his toes for most parts of the first half and the defender was almost always second best.

Jordi Alba 6: Took it on to himself to create chances on the left with Philippe Coutinho absolutely shut down by the Sevilla defence.
Sergio Busquets 6: Maintained the tempo of the goals in intervals and played the part of the lever in midfield.  Showed signs of fatigue with his movements, at times.
Arturo Vidal 5: Bang average in midfield, provided some support in defence but eventually taken off at half-time.
Ivan Rakitic 6: Could have been more vertical with his passes. Nevertheless, bagged an assist and was far from the worst player on the pitch.


 Philippe Coutinho 5: Typically uninspiring display. Failed to provide any threat on the left. Linked up well with Messi, at times but failed to deliver the final product.
Luis Suarez 6: Failed to get his basics right at first. Overestimated his own abilities with his runs and dribbles, still needs to work a lot on his touches. However, he sealed Barcelona’s win with an injury-time goal.
Lionel Messi 9: Was poor with his passes at first, but went on to save Barcelona’s blushes – like he always does – by scoring a hat-trick. Most importantly, got Suarez on the scoresheet as well.
SUBSTITUTES
Sergi Robrto 6: An upgrade over what Semedo provided.  The right flank moved well after his introduction and the defensive compromise was not too much.
Ousmane Dembele 5: Was his shabby self and lacked end product. Missed a sitter, but made up by providing the assist for the equaliser.
Carles Alena N/A: Came on for the last 10 minutes, directed the shot on goal which turned into an assist after a deflection.

Barcelona fans in joyous mood ahead of their must win La Liga game against Sevilla after they receibe this positive news. According to All Football, following Sevilla’s victory in the Europa League over Lazio on Wednesday night, the club has released statements on the injuries suffered by two key players Sergio Escudero and Jesús Navas. Both are considered serious doubts for this weekend’s match against FC Barcelona in LaLiga. Escudero is the most likely of the two to be ruled out. He was taken off in just the sixth minute after he felt pain in his hamstring. Due to him needing to be replaced, the defender is expected to miss a few weeks of action.

As for Jesus Navas, who completed the match but was clearly in discomfort, Sevilla are still waiting the test results. Navas might be fit enough for a place on the bench but it appears unlikely he will start against Barça. Sevilla haven’t won in their last four LaLiga matches (3 defeats, 1 draw) but remain in fourth position, one point ahead of Getafe.

Meanwhile, Barcelona have been fairly consistent in LaLiga Santander this term and one of the major reasons for that has been the continued improvement shown by Ousmane Dembele as he continues to win over his critics in Catalonia. Signed for 105 million euros to replace Neymar, Dembele struggled initially at the Camp Nou as he endured an injury-hit debut season. A failure to perform consistently after his recovery saw rumours emerge linking the former Borussia Dortmund star with a loan move away from the Catalan giants, however the 2018/19 season has seen him elevate his game to a new level.

Barcelona may well have been concerned about his off-field behaviour, but since being whistled by his own fans in the first league meeting with Sevilla this season, Dembele has arguably become the most important part of Los Cules’ attack after Lionel Messi. In 29 matches this term, Dembele has started 22 of them and has scored 13 goals, surpassing his previous best record in a single campaign.
With his missed training sessions now firmly in the rear-view mirror for those in power at the club, so are his previous poor performances in the eyes of the fans. Those who whistled him against Sevilla previously now cheer him, and it’s now a shock when the French international isn’t included in Ernesto Valverde’s starting line-up.

Sergio Ramos goes face to face. The captain of Real Madrid knows better than anyone that this year the League is impossible. And so he has let Gerard Piqué know with messages in which the championship is lost.
Whites are not going to let go in the domestic championship, but they are very clear that the title will be Barça.


With this reality almost immovable on the table, Ramos and company are conjured under a double objective.
First, fight for the Champions, fetish competition. And second, go for the Copa del Rey as if it were a major title.
Despised many times by the greats, the Royal sees in the KO competition a lifeline to which he wants to grab.


Adding four consecutive Champions is the great desire, but nobody escapes that it is also a capital enterprise.
The Cup, on the contrary, and if it is confirmed the elimination of Barca at the hands of Sevilla, points to a military outing for whites.

Levante are taking their complaint over Barcelona’s alleged illegal line-up in the first leg of the two sides’ Copa del Rey last 16 tie to the Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS), but the institution has denied their request to suspend cup action. The Valencian club believed that their case would be less likely to succeed if Barcelona’s quarter-final tie against Sevilla had already kicked off, so called for the tie to be suspended until the courts had ruled on the matter.
However, CAS have dismissed this particular request this Wednesday morning and the first leg at the Estadio Sanchez Pizjuan will go ahead as planned at 21:30 CET on Wednesday evening. Levante had already argued their case to the Spanish FA’s competition committee and appeals committee, but their complaint was deemed to have been submitted too late.

Meanwhile, both Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets will play no role in the cup game with the Basque coach opting to rotate the squad ahead of the LaLiga match this weekend as the Catalan giants face Girona. On the other hand, the Blaugrana new signing Boateng has been immediately included in the team squad, on the same day he took part in his first training session as a Barcelona player.

The Barcelona can get to get the best version of soccer players, as long as they fit the philosophy of the club, but if that does not happen, the player can get to show an unrecognizable level. One of those who is not making the grade within the current leader of LaLiga is Malcolm Filipe Silva de Oliveira , who is receiving several opportunities, and so far has not shown why it was brought from Ligue 1 .

In the Girondins de Bordeaux was the undisputed figure, and although this team is of the middle line in the French championship, the Brazilian had great performances against the leaders, unleashing in this way the interest of great teams.

In the Barça , at first he showed some details in the preseason, and even in a Champions League match he seemed to be finding the state so that everyone in the club claimed, but this was only a mirage. Ernesto Valverde for his part, has supported the attacker, so that he regains confidence.
Malcom was considered part of the starting team in the first leg of Copa del Rey that was played against Sevilla , this being a golden opportunity to show his credentials. The game was a real catastrophe, due to the fact that it ended with an adverse score of 2-0, and the Canarinha player was seen as erratic in most of the actions in which he took part, even though his attitude was positive in regarding the physical deployment.  

For Messi , the end has no level for the Catalan team, and considers that he has not understood the game azulgrana, which results in not add to the performance of the set. The Argentine crack prefers that Denis Suárez remains in his place, but the Salcedense is beginning to have problems with the institution. Who will end up staying?

Chelsea have avoided a long slog out to eastern Europe with a trip over the North Sea to Malmo.
The Blues will play away in the first leg in February.

It’s not the draw Hoops manager Brendan Rodgers would have wanted.
But at least travelling Celtic fans will get a respite from the Glaswegian winter for a few days in Spain.

Arsenal head to BATE

Arsenal have arguably the most frustrating draw from the three British clubs left in the competition.
A direct flight from London to Minsk takes three hours.
From there it’s a coach journey to Borisov.

Europa League last-32 dates

The dates of the last-32 fixtures in the Europa League have been confirmed.
The first legs will take place on 12, 14 of February.
The second legs will be on 20, 21 of February.
Not all matches will be on Thursdays. Because some cities will host two matches on the same night, it means Fenerbahce will play their home leg on Tuesday, February 12.
Sevilla and Arsenal will have their second legs played on Wednesday, February 20.

Celtic possible opponents

The Hoops are unseeded in this draw and coulee face Arsenal or Chelsea.
But Brendan Rodgers’ men also face the possibility of clashing with one of the top-seeded teams from the Champions League.
Napoli, Valencia, Inter and Benfica would all pose a serious challenge to Rodgers and co.
Celtic could also end up heading east, with Zenit and Kyiv both seeded for the draw.

Arsenal and Chelsea possible opponents

Arsenal and Chelsea are seeded in the Europa League knockout draw either side could face Celtic in the last-32.
Arsenal and  may also come up against big-hitters Sporting, Lazio, Galatasaray or Olympiacos.
A trip to Belarus to face BATE would not the best situation for either club.

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has explained that the players returning to his Champions League squad trained in front of the media on Tuesday before flying to Seville.
There was a change in the usual routine at the Aon Training Complex as the cameras were able to capture a later part of the session, with Paul Pogba, Antonio Valencia, Marcus Rashford and Ander Herrera all present after missing the Emirates FA Cup victory at Huddersfield Town.
The quartet's availability is a boost ahead of the round-of-16 tie with Sevilla as the Reds seek a positive result ahead of the second leg at Old Trafford.
"We opened the training session today and I open in a period where we normally don't open," said the manager. "We normally do it in the warming up and the first simple drills of the training session. This time, we did it for quite a long time and in the last period so we could see players in a competitive situation.
"When a player is in that competitive situation, it's because the players are normally ready and without problems, so you could see in that training some people that didn't play against Huddersfield with problems - like Pogba, Valencia, Rashford and Herrera."
Ever Banega, Joaquin Correa and Luis Muriel are all fit and available for the hosts but Sebastian Corchia is rated doutful.
"I normally say that Champions League dreams start around the quarter-finals and not yet in the last 16," added the boss. "Last 16 still looks a long way to go. When a team reaches the quarter-finals, I think it's the moment where even the teams that are not favourites - which is our case - they start realising that anything is possible. 
"But for the moment, I think we have to just focus on the very difficult opponent [Sevilla] and the first match of this two-legged knockout tie - a match that doesn't decide anything but is very important."
