Barça is still looking for a substitute for guarantees for Luis Suarez, who already sees the end of his career as a professional, although he continues to perform at a high level.

The future of Jordi Alba, finally, seems to be in Barça. After months of intense negotiations, the Catalan club has managed to close the agreement to renew its contract.

January 24 – Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona have taken over at the top of this year’s Deloitte Football Money League, relegating Manchester United to third place.
But all of the Premier League’s Big Six are in the top ten of the table, which monitors top-line growth among the world’s – in practice Europe’s – biggest clubs.
Deloitte said that European champion club Real Madrid’s revenue jump to €750.9 million was “primarily due to commercial growth of €54.8 million, including an uplift in sponsorship, merchandising and exploitation of increasingly lucrative pre-season fixtures. At €356.2 million,” Deloitte continued, “Real Madrid now have the highest commercial revenue of any football club globally”.
After Madrid, the rest of the top ten was as follows: Barcelona €690.4 million, Manchester United €666 million, Bayern Munich €629.2 million, Manchester City €568.4 million, Paris Saint-Germain €541.7 million, Liverpool €513.7 million, Chelsea €505.7 million, Arsenal €439.2 million and Tottenham Hotspur €428.3 million.
Nine of the top 20 were English, four Italian, three German, three Spanish and one French. Combined revenues of this top 20 rose 6% to €8.3 billion. While Premier League club turnover was depressed by the depreciation of sterling, the impact was not sufficient to significantly change the rankings.
By focusing on the top-line, this exercise gives only a partial picture of prevailing trends in European club finances. Recent seasons have seen the biggest clubs enjoying an enviable combination of strong revenue growth and relatively subdued wage hikes. This has given them lots to spend on new players, triggering inflation in the transfer market.
With market valuations pushed far in excess balance-sheet values – this month’s UEFA club benchmarking report calculated that “players sold in the 2017 financial year had a combined transfer fee of €4.3 billion, but were valued at just €1.1 billion at the time of their sale” – and the amortisation process working its magic, even nominally “buying” clubs are finding net profits pumped up by gains on player sales.

It may be considerably more than €100 million.
Interestingly, the three clubs elbowed out of this year’s top 20 – Leicester City, Napoli and Southampton – all featured among the top ten European clubs on the basis of net profits in the 2016-17 financial year. According to UEFA, Leicester and Napoli were first and second.
“The curse of all curses is the revenue line,” according to the late Roberto Goizueta, a notably successful boss of frequent football sponsor Coca-Cola. It is not quite the same, arguably, for football clubs, but the revenue line does not the whole story tell.

At Bayern Munich the time has come to change many names. The bad and atypical results that are having this season, are taken as an indication that it is necessary to bring fresh players, which come with another dynamic outside and a thirst for triumphs that perhaps many of the players belonging to the squad have lost, because they have become accustomed to the titles.

One of the greatest exponents of the Bavarian team looking for a change of environment is Thomas Müller , who has been characterized by a way of playing that appeals to total delivery on the court. The qualities of the German do not stand out for his technical ability, but he has a nose for goal that led him to be a scorer in a world championship, always being in the right place to finalize the scores.

Philippe Coutinho has cause to worry. The player of Barca takes several months to a level far below the expected, which has cost him the substitution and criticism of Valverde and the fans.
But that's not where the problem ends. Coutinho, the most expensive signing in Barcelona history, not only has lost his place in the eleven, but you can also lose it in the squad.



The Brazilian can be the one sacrificed to bring a galactic who completes the trident, like Mbappé, who can leave PSG. 'Cou', at 26, still has great market value and a poster in the Premier League.
The Barcelona would not look with bad eyes the possibility of transferring it if in exchange it receives the same thing that it paid for him, 160 million euros. An amount that does not scare your suitors.

Jordi Alba prepares his escape. The Catalan side is still waiting for an offer of renewal that does not arrive and his future moves away more and more from Barça, despite the efforts of Messi.
The directive has been delaying the negotiations and now they are at a critical point. Alba finishes contract the following summer and this would be the last one in which Barcelona could get something with his march. The big clubs are aware.


Juventus, Manchester City, PSG, Bayern Munich and Liverpool bid for L'Hospitalet,which could come out at a reasonable price. If not, they could have it for free if they wait another year.
Messi, who considers Jordi untouchable, has asked for an extra last-minute effort to stretch the bond of one of his best partners. But Alba has taken off asking for a fortune: to be the second best paid of the team, ahead of Suarez or Piqué. 

Right now, the conversations with the Spanish international are frozen. And the rush begins to be born. At 29, the left-back can pack his bags early and try his fortune abroad.

MANCHESTER UNITED face a huge task in reaching the Champions League quarter-final after drawing PSG in the last 16.Jose Mourinho’s side might need to win the competition to qualify next season after their domestic struggles so far in the current campaign.

As the only seeded English side, Manchester City earned a favourable draw against Schalke and they remain the favourites to win the trophy.

United will face PSG who have been in scintillating form this season.

As well as topping a group that included Liverpool and Napoli, the French giants are cruising in Ligue 1 and are yet to lose in the league in 16 games.

They also have one of the most feared forward lines in world football.

How will the likes of Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelof , Chris Smalling and Phil Jones deal with Kylian Mbappe, Edison Cavani and Neymar.

GOOD OMEN FOR LIVERPOOL?

Liverpool look to have got unlucky by drawing Bayern Munich.
But history might be on their side if we look back at some of their other European encounters.
The pair have faced off in Europe’s top competition only once before, with the Reds coming out on top on away goals in the 1980/81 semi-final. They also won 3-2 in the 2011 UEFA Super Cup.

The draw is just ten minutes away and Manchester United’s Juan Mata sounds confident despite the prospect of facing one of the competition’s big guns.
"We have to wait and see who we play against,” he said.
“We have to believe that we can beat whoever it is. It is going to be a difficult team because obviously the teams that qualified are very good."

Virgil van Dijk is hoping Liverpool can go one better than last year.
The Reds were beaten by Real Madrid in a thrilling final And the Dutchman is desperate to get his hands on the trophy this time around.
"We want to reach the maximum and hopefully do better than we did last year in the Champions League,” Van Dijk said.
“You need to have dreams, you need to go for it, otherwise why would you be a footballer?"

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp could face former club Borussia Dortmund in the last 16.
And his ex-player Mario Gotze has spoken about the prospect of a reunion.
“That would be a tough test,” the German playmaker said.
“Let's wait and see what happens. Regardless of which opponent you get in the Champions League last 16, it will be tense and very, very tough."

JOSE’S TOP FOUR CLAIM

Does United boss Jose Mourinho might need to win the Champions League to stand any chance of getting in to the competition next season?
Well, Mourinho is having none of it despite his side being a whopping 11 points off the top four after Sunday's defeat by Liverpool.
“Yes, I think (we can),” he said. “What gives me that belief? It gives me the belief that we are going to make much more points in the second part of the season than we did in the first part.”
“I know we lost some other matches but we played away at Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City - probably the three best teams apart from Tottenham.
“But we play with them away. I think we have more possibility to get more points in the second part of the season than the first part.”

Just a quick reminder as to how this works - in case you didn’t already know.
No teams from the same country can be drawn against each other and teams who qualified from the same group will be kept apart for this round.
Seeded teams will have the advantage - if it is one - of playing the first leg away from home.
Just looking at the potential opponents for the unseeded English teams and it makes for some scary reading. Porto must be the one team they all want.

Good morning and Welcome to Express Sport’s live coverage of the Champions League last-16 draw.
We have all of the four English teams in the hat - although only Manchester City are seeded.
Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham are all facing the prospect of a very tough draw, with the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich a potential opponent for all three of them.
We are due to get underway at 11am. But, as I’m sure you know, these things have a habit of being delayed.
