According to the Express, Chelsea have contacted Barcelona in order to enquire about the availability of Philippe Coutinho.
The Blues are apparently not the first Premier League outfit to make an approach this month, with Manchester United having also shown interest in the 26-year-old attacker.
As per the aforementioned report, Chelsea have been quoted a £100 million price by the La Liga giants, despite Coutinho having cost them an initial £105 million – which could rise to £142 million – to bring him to the Camp Nou in January 2018.
The 45-cap Brazil international has failed to make himself an established starter in Spain though, and could be set to lose out to Ousmane Dembele in the race to secure a future in Barcelona.
If Chelsea could land Coutinho for the above price then he would be a sensational signing. The attacking midfielder still has his best years ahead of him and has proven his quality in the Premier League before with Liverpool.
Maurizio Sarri needs to freshen up the attacking contingent at Stamford Bridge, with the likes of Willian, Pedro and Olivier Giroud all past their best. Too much of the creative and goalscoring burden is currently on Eden Hazard, and Coutinho could take a lot of the weight off of the Belgian’s shoulders.
What’s more, Coutinho’s versatility and differing style of play makes him the ideal partner for Hazard, rather than a replacement option who would have to compete for his place with the Chelsea talisman.
