FC Barcelona could be disqualified from the Copa del Rey if the relevant authorities rule against them for having fielded an ineligible player, according to reports in Catalonia.
Levante is reportedly studying the possibility of launching a complaint based on the belief that Chumi should not have been allowed to play in Barcelona’s 2-1 loss in the first leg of their cup tie.
Those norms surrounding the case have caused controversy as several experts sided with Barça’s interpretation, which said Chumi was free to play the match. There was even a report that the Spanish federation agreed with them.
But now, the radio show Sin Concesiones is saying the federation disagrees with Barcelona on the rules, which could prove problematic. Regardless, Levante were supposed to only have 48 hours to lodge a complaint, a deadline that has already passed. However, the show stated that Levante could still lodge a complaint that would be evaluated by a competition judge.
Cadena SER also reported that Levante could file a complaint and is even studying taking their case up with the Court for Arbitration for Sport in an attempt to secure progress into the next round.
Both sources say that Barcelona are calm over the matter.
