And the Catalan giants have been made aware of the availability of Chelsea’s David Luiz, according to reports.
The Brazilian has fallen out with boss Antonio Conte and now looks highly likely to be shipped out when the transfer market reopens in three days’ time.
Luiz has been left out of the last 10 match day squads and is desperate to get back playing to make Brazil’s World Cup squad next summer.
Barcelona look set to lose Javier Mascherano to Chinese outfit Hebei China Fortune next month.
And they have been offered the chance to replace him with Luiz, according to Spanish publication Don Balon.
But the 30-year-old would not be allowed to play in the Champions League this season after featuring for the Blues.
And that would be a major stumbling block for Ernesto Valverde as he hopes to secure his first piece of European silverware.
Instead the Barca boss is expected to turn his attention to two of the world’s brightest defensive talents.
Columbian Yerry Mina, of Palmeiras, is the number one target.
However, he is apparently not keen to move until next summer.
The second is Ajax’s Mathijs de Ligt.
The 18-year-old has already sampled Champions League football and would be able to slot straight into the Barcelona back-line.
