Chelsea have struggled this season to repeat their last year’s heroics. A squad that thinned down on its numbers instead of beefing up is now paying the price of playing two games a week. With the January transfer window coming up, here is a look at the possible signings at the club.
Ross Barkley
Barkley is a dynamic and technically gifted player with a certain love for the dramatics. Unlike most other English players of the yesteryear, Barkley may not be the consistent player but has enough zap in his game to create a difference on the pitch. He is known for his expansive style of play and always looks to make the sharp pass, the fancy dribble or try the outrageous shot rather than keep the ball rolling in the park.
A player with good pace and power, the 23-year old is already a dynamic midfielder and has the perfect years ahead of him to mature and mould into a superstar player if he can stay injury free and add more composure to his game.
Chelsea’s move for Barkley would tick multiple boxes for the club. First and foremost it would take care of the homegrown players’ quota, a developing problem at SW6 since the departures of Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard and John Terry.
In terms of fitting into Antonio Conte’s 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 formation, Barkley would be eligible to play as a deep-lying midfielder or an attacking midfielder or even a wing-forward and hence provide multiple covers for the Italian. This would mean that there would be no dearth of game time for the English player and he could get to choose his preferred position over the years as his development continues.
Moussa Dembele
Celtic forward Moussa Dembele bagged 32 goals in his first season in Scotland which helped Celtic swoop the domestic treble. Despite struggling with injuries this term he still has around ten goals this season for the Hoops.
He has scored a massive 39 goals in just 63 games for the club already and has become their first team hitman above Griffiths. The 21-year-old Frenchman is tipped to become one of the deadliest finishers in Europe and has been linked with a great number of clubs, including many in the Premier League.
The Italian tactician would love to see Dembele as an ideal back up to Alvaro and with the Frenchman also able to operate alongside Morata, Conte might decide to use him alongside the Spaniard with Hazard in behind in a top 3 should Dembele continue his goalscoring exploits of Celtic at West London.
Yannick Carrasco
Chelsea already have a contingent of Belgian players in the squad with the likes of Hazard and Courtois at the club for years now. Carrasco might be convinced or persuaded by them away at the national camp to make the switch to the West London club where he will no doubt be a first-team regular.
Besides Morata and Hazard, the existing crop Chelsea attackers have failed to make a mark and the winger would be the perfect foil for Hazard and Morata and should the three frontmen be able to strike a chemistry, it can take Chelsea far into the depths of many competitions this season.
