Spanish outlet Diario Gol report today that French giants Paris Saint-Germain are eyeing a swoop for Barcelona midfielder/defender Javier Mascherano, after the versatile veteran admitted that his time in Spain may soon come to an end.
Ever-present
33-year-old Mascherano has been at the Camp Nou since making the move from Liverpool in 2010, going on to rack up over 200 appearances in La Liga alone.
However, with Samuel Umtiti and Gerard Pique standing as the clear first-choice central defensive partnership for the Calatans (and Yerry Mina to arrive next year), and Barca reluctant to utilise the South American in his natural deep-lying midfield position, opportunities are now at a premium for Mascherano at the Camp Nou.
‘I might leave’
Speaking in an interview with La Nacion earlier today, Mascherano was probed on the possibility of him seeking a move away from Barcelona in the near future, with the 139-time capped international admitting:
‘I think it might be time. I might leave Barca in 2018. I always sat down at the end of the season with the board and coaches and they made the decision. This time, it may be me who makes the decision.’
Paris bound?
Despite his age, Mascherano is still a highly capable player and valuable presence in the dressing room, with the situation of the veteran at the Camp Nou said to have alerted Ligue 1 giants PSG.
As per the aforementioned report from Diario Gol, Unai Emery’s men are keeping a close eye on developments between the River Plate youth product and the Blaugrana, and will consider a move next summer.
