Injury to Javier Mascherano and Samuel Umtiti may force Barcelona into the January transfer market with Daley Blind and Stefan de Vrij both on the Catalan club's shortlist.
The immediate defenders linked with Barcelona were Inigo Martinez and Yerry Mina, and yet both centre-backs divide opinion inside the Camp Nou with the latter already set to arrive in the summer for 9 million euros.
An alternative may come from the Netherlands with Lazio's de Vrij available for a free transfer in June, opening up hope of a cheap deal in the upcoming window.
However Atletico Madrid, Liverpool and Juventus have all been touted for a bid as the 25-year-old was watched by Blaugrana technical secretary Robert Fernandez when the Aquile faced Torino in Serie A last weekend.
Manchester United are able to extend Blind's contract past its current summer expiry date but, despite his versatility across the defence and midfield, the Dutchman hasn't been favoured by coach Jose Mourinho this campaign and could be ready to move.
While the Azulgrana took an interest in the former Ajax man in 2014, there is a fear that his best form is behind him as Barcelona scour the market for a January bargain.
